"I love Los Angeles. I know a lot of people go there and they see just a huge sprawl of sameness. But when you’re there for a while, you realize that each section has its own mood. The golden age of cinema is still alive there, in the smell of jasmine at night and the beautiful weather. And the light is inspiring and energizing. Even with smog, there’s something about that light that’s not harsh, but bright and smooth. It fills me with the feeling that all possibilities are available. I don’t know why. It’s different from the light in other places. The light in Philadelphia, even in the summer, is not nearly as bright. It was the light that brought everybody to L.A. to make films in the early days. It’s still a beautiful place."
David Lynch, Catching The Big Fish (via bbook)

[I don’t like David Lynch. I saw Mulholland Dr. and Crossroads back-to-back on Thanksgiving ‘03 and Crossroads was better. And not just because Officer Romatelli came out in it.
But, I do like this quote because it really captures the LA S&J seem to love so much. I hated LA (despite never having been there) before UYD. I don’t know, it just seemed so vacuous and vague, like the worst of modern America had collected in a waterless cesspit of greed, gangs, and plastic surgery. But UYD has caused a sea change in my thinking about the city. Now, I see that it is exactly what I thought—a modern American bricolage of our worst impulses and prettiest faces—but shame on me for wanting to turn my head away.
Maybe that’s the point of UYD as a larger entity. Think about the slogans, which are funny, but I think mean something, too: “American through the eyes of two American Americans,” “Saving America from Herself.” America is like LA— sometimes it’s ugly (unlike Seth and Jah), but sometimes it’s majestic; besides, what it looks like doesn’t matter when we have the cineramadome where Seth can see Paul Blart: Mall Cop at 6 a.m., so what the fuck is there to complain about, really? Plus, it’s ours and we’re here, so your place sucks.
Like Lynch says (unfunnily, ugh), you know that pollution you’re always whining about? Well, it makes our light shine shinier, so suck it, Finland. And you know how we put half our adult population in jail? Well, maybe that ain’t cool, but I bet you don’t got a Jonathan Lee Riches, do you, JAPAN? So FUCK OFF. At least with UYD, we’re laughing instead of crying about the state of things. (Except Seth. I’m pretty sure he cries for all of us. How else could he possibly be so funny? There has to be some sort of Faustian bargain going.) At the end of the day, when all is said and done, even though I should hate America more after listening to (mumbles inaudibly) hours of SethJah telling me about all of the wicked things Americans do and have done, somehow I’ve ended up liking America more, too. Go figure. UYD4Life. Love, Sethro.]
